Ricky Taylor Tops Shortened CTMP Practice | IMSA Chevrolet Grand Prix Highlights (2026)

Ricky Taylor, the Cadillac factory driver, dominated the opening practice session for the Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, setting a record-breaking lap time of 1:08.080. Taylor's performance was a testament to his skill and the prowess of his team, Bryan Herta Autosport with PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports. This achievement is all the more impressive considering he was substituting for the absent Harry Tincknell, who is currently in Brazil.

The session was not without its challenges, however. An accident involving a GTD car cut the session short by ten minutes, and the aftermath of the incident added an extra layer of complexity. Despite this setback, Taylor's performance remained exceptional, leaving him just 0.098 seconds ahead of second-placed Sebastian Alvarez.

The LMP2 headline race this weekend saw Alex Quinn take third place with a time of 1:08.287. Ben Hanley and Tom Dillmann followed closely behind, securing fourth and fifth places, respectively. United Autosports and Inter Europol Competition demonstrated their strength in this category.

In the GT car category, Philip Ellis from Winward Racing claimed the top spot with his Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, outperforming the entire GTD Pro field. The No. 3 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3, driven by Antonio Garcia, was the quickest in its class, showcasing the prowess of Corvette in the GT3 category.

The session witnessed two red flags, the first due to an accident at Moss Corner involving Lorenzo Patrese's No. 34 Conquest Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo. Patrese, with the assistance of the IMSA recovery team, managed to bring the car back to the pit lane with minor damage and later rejoined the action. The second red flag was raised after Callum Ilott's No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R Evo made heavy contact with the tire barriers at the same corner, bringing an end to the practice session.

Both Ilott and Patrese are expected to face penalties for their incidents, as their accidents brought out red flags during practice. The second and final practice session is scheduled for Saturday at 10:35 a.m. EST, followed by qualifying at 4 p.m., which will be streamed live on Peacock and IMSA's YouTube channel.

This race promises to be an exciting spectacle, with Taylor's impressive performance setting the stage for a thrilling competition. The challenges faced during the practice session only add to the anticipation, as the teams and drivers strive to overcome obstacles and secure their positions for the upcoming qualifying and race.
