The footage from the drone revealed a patchy distribution of coral, growing on rocky substrates, rather than a continuous barrier.

Zinzindohoué emphasizes the significance of this discovery, noting that it is the first confirmed record of a living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea's continental shelf. However, he also acknowledges the vast unknowns that remain. The team has not yet been able to directly sample the corals, and the possibility of the reef being dead in the 1960s and now recovered cannot be ruled out.
