Boosting Longevity: The Power of VO2 Max

In the quest for a longer, healthier life, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the myriad of fitness trends and health fads. But according to Connor Darnbrough, an ISSA-certified personal trainer and nutritional consultant, there's a single metric that reigns supreme when it comes to predicting longevity: VO2 max.

What is VO2 max, you ask? Simply put, it's the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise. Think of it as a measure of your body's aerobic capacity, and it's a key indicator of cardiovascular fitness. Darnbrough, who co-founded the Smart Fit Method, a health and longevity training system with eight locations across California, Utah, and soon-to-be Arizona, emphasizes its importance.

"VO2 max is the single strongest predictor of longevity," he tells Fit&Well. "It's more significant than blood pressure, cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI)."

The science backs him up. A 2018 study found that participants with the highest cardiorespiratory fitness had a mortality risk five times lower than those in the lowest fitness group. Even moving from low fitness to average or above average was associated with a significant reduction in risk.

So, how do we boost our VO2 max? Darnbrough recommends starting with zone 2 training, which involves sustained aerobic activity where you can hold a full conversation without gasping for breath. Walking briskly, light jogging, cycling at a moderate pace, or swimming steadily all qualify.

"At this intensity, your body builds the mitochondrial density and fat-burning efficiency that underlie all aerobic fitness," he explains. "Consistency is key." For beginners, he suggests 20-30 minutes of zone 2 exercise three times a week, with no intervals or intensity.

As you progress, Darnbrough advises introducing short high-intensity intervals. For older adults, he recommends a structured approach: warm up at a light zone 2 intensity for five minutes, then alternate 30 seconds of harder effort with 90 seconds of easy recovery for four to six intervals, finishing with a five-minute cool-down.

"The key is that the hard portions feel genuinely hard, but not all-out," he says. "Conversation should be possible, but it should be challenging."

But it's not just about the intensity. Darnbrough emphasizes the importance of strength training to build and preserve muscle mass. "Muscle mass is metabolically active tissue," he notes. "The more muscle mass you have, the greater your body's capacity to absorb and use oxygen."

In conclusion, Darnbrough's approach to longevity is a holistic one, focusing on building aerobic capacity and muscle mass. By embracing zone 2 training and incorporating high-intensity intervals, we can significantly impact our health and longevity. So, are you ready to take control of your health and boost your VO2 max?
